7 August 25, 2010 E. J. Clapton (Devon UK) I intend to install this but people have told me to keep with my XP?
MS Windows 7 August 20, 2010 P. D. Duffell MS Windows 7 is a significant improvement on both XP and Vista - much better presentation and easier to use etc. The one 'minor' issue I had was that it took quite a long time to install (like 5 hours!) - as I had to install the latest SP for the o/s I was using. Also I couldn't upgrade to 64 bit as you have to do a complete re-install if you aren't using 64 bit in Vista. You then have to re-install all of your software packages. As I couldn't find all of my software discs/licences I had to stick with 32 bit as I couldn't face turning the house upside down to find them... so aren't yet able to fully benefit from the 64 bit architecture.
This is more of a 'for information' comment. It doesn't detract from Win 7 I'd still thoroughly recomment it, its just forewarned is forearmed and they don't tell you this when you buy the upgrade.
Since installing it has been great - system load/shutdown times are very quick. Thoroughly recomment - at last MS is shipping products that I feel able to endorse!
Way more stable than Vista August 17, 2010 koma931 My wife got her Vaio laptop with Vista a year ago but recent crashes started driving us nuts. I already heard quite good stuff about Win7 so thought why not go that way: ordered from Amazon, it arrived in a couple days, installation went really smooth and all the previous problems were gone. There was a tiny issue with the Intel 5100 AGN driver but managed to sort it out with the latest one from the vendor-site.
Stick with xp August 16, 2010 RK 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Upgraded from xp after using the compatability wizard, which claimed my pc was compatable with a couple of updates. far from accurate, nothing but headaches and no support from microsoft without a charge. Still unable to connect to the internet with my desktop due to an IPConf issue although my laptop continues to work suggesting it is not a modem or router issue ,It is a common problem if you search the web. How they continue to get away with such poor products and customer service, buyer beware, if it conflicts with your software your on your own.
Do not trust Microsoft August 16, 2010 Jd Regan 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I ran the compatibility wizard and was informed that I could go ahead. Fantastic. So I duly ordered my copy of Windows 7, backed up my PC and began the install. I upgraded, rather than fully installed 7 and what an issue. It knocked out my DVD drive so I couldn't run anything from the DVD drive. To add to my troubles 7 decided to download its updates which completely wiped out the normal 7. Instead I had to boot up in safe mode. After finally getting it to start a full install, my pc got halfway, displayed a 'out of range' error and shut down. Now it won't even boot up in safe mode. I can't get it to reinstall vista as my DVD drive has been taken out and it will not boot from the external hard drive I turned into a boot disk. Furthermore, a tech friend of mine ran my specs through the manufacturor database and found that my pc will NOT accept 7. Windows Compatibilty lied. To make matters even worse I went onto the forums seeking help and found millions, yes millions of people on the MICROSOFT forum having the same issue. Oh and the head of Products has publically stated that 'This is not a priority issue for Microsoft.' Excuse me? Millions of pc's are being wiped out by defunct software and they're not interested. Safe to say I'm not happy. So unhappy in fact that I have given them 5 working days to replace my PC or I will take my case to the Office of Fair Trading and the Federal Trade Commission. This is something I will not accept. If you want to upgrade then please check your own requirements and your pc manufacturer. good luck
